What the Upcoming Election Means for Communicators

Let’s start by naming it directly. Not only are we working during a global pandemic (with case counts on the rise), we’re overdue for this reckoning with hundreds of years of systemic racism. Parents are up to their eyeballs struggling with child care and school. There are wildfires…even murderous insects. These are turbulent times, my friends.

Now, we’re standing mere days away from an election that is paramount to our country’s future. We’re looking ahead, and it feels unknown. Challenging.

So the big question is: How should communicators and leaders approach the upcoming election?

No matter the outcome of the election, we’re entering another marathon—while still exhausted from our current realities. We’ll have urgent, important work to do on behalf of children and families.

It will be tempting to immediately begin communicating externally about the election results and what they mean for our causes and the children and families we care about.

Resist that urge.

Instead, start with internal communications. When times are tough, the most important thing we can do is take care of ourselves and those closest to us. Important work ahead means that you need your team in fighting shape.

First things first, make sure you’re helping your team process what the election means for your organization and work. Start with how the election results impact your organization’s mission and goals. Be sure to share these reflections and potential next action steps with your internal teammates.

Remember that repetition is key, especially in times of stress. Plan your internal communications in a variety of formats:

Your internal communications should ensure your team knows that they aren’t alone, and share how your organization will tackle what lies ahead. This is a great opportunity to ask for feedback as well, building buy in on your next steps.

This election’s outcome will represent something a little different for all of us. But the one thing I can promise is that we're going to work through the results—and what they mean for our work—together, and we’ll be right here to support you along the way.

Hang in there, friend. Your work is important, and there is so much more to come. Take good care of yourself and your team.
