Communications is an act of love

Written by KATIE TEST DAVIS

When the Forthright team gathered for our yearly retreat this month, we reflected on 2023 and mapped what we want to accomplish for our clients in 2024.

When asked what drained us in 2023, “the news” came up time and time again.

In 2023, we fought politicians working to dismantle public education. We battled funding cuts that impact kids and families. We’ve had our hearts broken daily from escalating violence in Israel-Palestine, Sudan and Ukraine. We demanded paid family leave for all. We struggled to re-envision child care in America. We supported leaders who are exhausted and overwhelmed.

Through it all, we’ve remained dedicated to dismantling structural oppression for children and their families.

That’s why, when we reflected on what brought us joy and gave us energy in 2023, it was our work alongside you – our community of child advocates and leaders – that kept us hopeful and moving forward.

It’s why we love collaborating with people like you, who work at organizations and for institutions that shine a light on injustice and demand change.

At Forthright, one of our core values is creating a better world for children and families. Our personal “why” is getting people the information they need to create a better life for themselves and their loved ones.

When I reflect on what gets me up in the morning and keeps me going, I rely on my ability to dream for a bigger future where people no longer have barriers to getting what they need.

We do that through storytelling.

We share new information through report releases and targeted announcements.

We create websites that get families the information they need.

We design campaigns that create policy change.

We write letters, talking points, FAQs, to get families what they need, when they need it.

Communication is an act of love. It’s an act of resistance, and a tool in the revolution. It’s a belief in a better future, a demand for more.

As we head into the holiday season, and Forthright closes our doors for the year on December 22nd, I’m holding my “why” tightly, with both hands.

Public relations and communications is how we help.

It’s how we hope. It’s how we build.

I cannot wait to see what we can create together in the new year, friends.
